An Algerian football fan Raouf Belkacemi is sobering up in prison custody after he allegedly urinated on the stands of Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium.
A court in Rabat remanded Belkacemi in prison custody pending his trial for indecent public behaviour and using profane language at a sporting event. The case will come up for hearing on January 19.
Raouf Belkacemi sparked online backlash after posting a viral video during the round of 16 match between his country and the Congo DR at Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium, in which he claimed he had urinated inside the stadium so that Moroccans present would smell it without knowing its source.
He later claimed that it was not urine but a drink, which was spilled on the seat.
The video sparked strong public reaction, with social media users in Morocco calling on authorities to hold the individual accountable for behavior they described as a clear violation of public decency and the law.
Several Algerian social media users also condemned the incident, describing the conduct as inappropriate and inconsistent with basic standards of behavior and sportsmanship.
