A woman has tragically passed away after doctors at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano, Kano State forgot a pair of surgical scissors in her stomach.
Aishatu Umar a mother of five kids had undergone surgery at the government owned health facility in September 2025 and had suffered excruciating abdominal pain till she passed away January 12.
Abubakar Mohammed, a relative of the woman said she made several trips to the hospital due to the pains but was given pain killers and asked to return home, until recently when a scan was run two days ago and it was discovered that surgical scissors was lodged in her belly. Before she could have a second surgery to remove the strange object, she passed away.
“She underwent surgery at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in September. After that, she complained of severe abdominal pain for months. Each time she returned to the hospital, she was given painkillers,” Mohammed said.
“It was only two days ago that scans were carried out, and that was when doctors discovered that scissors had been forgotten inside her body. Plans were made for another surgery, but she passed away before it could be done.”
He lamented the level of incompetence and negligence by the hospital.
“How can medical professionals forget a pair of scissors inside a patient’s body? This is unacceptable and damages the integrity of the health sector,” he said.
Kano State Hospitals Management Board said it has opened investigations into the circumstances surrounding Ashatu’s death. Secretary of the board Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, assured the public that the investigation would be transparent, impartial and professional.
