The police in Kano State have tracked down and arrested a 23-year-old man and two others who allegedly slaughtered 35-year-old Fatima Abubakar and her six children in the Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters in Kano City.
The killing of the family members on Friday night left the nation in shock and the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun ordered his men to fish out the killers. Their corpses were discovered on January 17 and on Sunday January 18, the police made a major breakthrough.
It turned out that the mastermind of the killings was Umar Auwalu of Sabuwar of Gandu Quarters, a nephew of the mother of six . Two other suspects were also arrested in connection with the case. They are Isyaku Yakubu, 40, also known as “Chebe,” from Sagagi Quarters, and Yakubu Abdulaziz, 21, popularly called “Wawo,” from Sabon Gida Sharada Quarters.
Kano police spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the suspect had made confessional statements linking himself and his associates to the crime.
Auwalu also admitted involvement in other violent crimes, including the killing of two women in Tudun Yola Quarters, Kano, in a separate incident currently under investigation.
As part of the operation, the police recovered items said to link the suspects to the crime. These include blood-stained clothing, mobile phones belonging to the deceased, and weapons allegedly used in the attack, as well as cash reportedly taken from the household.
