Registration for the second Niger Delta Games surpassed expectations reaching 8,000 athletes and coaches with Cross River State topping the list.
Delta State has the second highest number of entrances for the Games billed for February 20-27 in Benin City Edo State.
The registration which ended on January 16, was strictly by national identification number, passport photo, birth certificate and other supporting documents, which will be reverified by the selection committee.
“We have already set up a Screening Committee headed by Braveman Wodi, former Bayelsa Director of Sports, who are scrutinising all the filings and comparing the records with all available data, including entries on the first edition, educational records etc,” said Mr. Fred Edore a member of the organising committee.
“These are pre-games measures, to identify any doubtful submissions, ahead of a final physical screening when the contigents arrive.”
He added liaison officers were appointed in all the participating States to ensure that all the registration guidelines are met.
“From all indications and reports from the States all the registration requirements have been adhered to.
“The states have been sent their registers as captured in the online exercise, to cross check for any mix ups, before the final state trials/selection, entries and final DRM exercise,” Mr. Edore added.
The Niger Delta Games is restricted to U-20 participation to meet with it’s objectives of discovering young talents in the Niger Delta Area.
