Over 170 people have been killed in an attack by suspected armed Islamic jihadists in the Woro community of Kwara State Nigeria.
According to Saidu Baba Ahmed a member of the Kwara House of Assembly representing the community, citizens were rounded up their hands tied behind their backs and executed, he said the attacked occurred on Tuesday at about 7.00pm, residents fled in panic as the gunmen fired indiscriminately and set houses ablaze.
They only retreated from the Woro at the sound of approaching Nigeria Airforce jets and are believed to be taking cover in the surrounding forests.
“As I’m speaking to you ⁠now, I’m in the village along with military personnel, sorting dead bodies and combing the surrounding areas for more,” Ahmed told Reuters in an interview.
Several people were still missing ‍on Wednesday morning, he said.
The jihadists believed to members of the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad often preached in the village, demanded that locals ditch their allegiance to the Nigerian state and switch to Sharia, Islamic ⁠law. When the villagers pushed back, the militants opened fire during Tuesday’s sermon.
Kwara police spokesperson Adetoun ​Ejire-Adeyemi said the police and military have been mobilized to the area ​for a search-and-rescue operation but declined to provide casualty details. With Reuters report
