Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi said he has not lost hope of participating in the 2026 World Cup.
The Super Eagles blew their chances when they couldn’t top their group qualifiers and then the CAF play offs where they lost to Congo DR on penalties. The Nigeria Football Federation claimed that several players of the Leopards are not eligible to play and filed a petition at FIFA hoping for some kind of positive results.
But so far, the world soccer governing body has maintained a radio silence as the continental players begin in March with Congo DR certain to participate.
However, Iwobi said he still hopeful something might come out of the NFF petition, which many Nigerians have seen as chasing a lost cause.
“We’re still waiting, well hopefully we can go to the World Cup, but I feel it’s a tough one,” Iwobi said on SuperSport.
“But then at the same time, because I’ve been to the World Cup already, a lot of the players haven’t been. They would like to say ‘I want to go to the World Cup,’ so I can’t be selfish and say win the AFCON and for my teammates to not go to the World Cup. So it’s a tough one. I don’t know. I don’t know.”
