Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), national president Abubakar Yakubu, has commended Edo State governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for appointing Nollywood icon Mercy Johnson-Okojie as Special Adviser on Public Engagement and Advocacy.
Speaking to journalists at the AGN National Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, an elated Yakubu described the appointment as a strategic recognition of Nollywood’s expanding role in governance, civic engagement, and national development.
According to him, the Governor has consistently demonstrated goodwill toward the Guild and the creative sector.
“The Edo State Governor has shown his love and commitment to our Guild. In December last year, he hosted the AGN National Conference, where we had delegates from over 30 states in attendance. To now appoint one of our distinguished members as Special Adviser just months later is a source of immense pride to our Guild and the entire creative ecosystem,” an elated look Yakubu stated.
He noted that Johnson Okojie’s vast public appeal, communication dexterity, and deep grassroots connection position her strongly to succeed in her new role.
Governor Okpebholo also described her as an accomplished actress, producer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, the Governor emphasised that Mercy Johnson-Okojie remains one of Nollywood’s most celebrated figures, with a career spanning nearly two decades and over 200 films.
Governor Okpebholo further highlighted that beyond entertainment, Mercy Johnson-Okojie has consistently deployed her platform to promote civic awareness, social responsibility, and community development.
Through the Mercy Johnson-Okojie Foundation, she has championed Women empowerment initiatives, Child welfare programs, Education support projects and Healthcare outreach services.
He added that her appointment reflects his administration’s resolve to harness the expertise, credibility, and goodwill of distinguished Nigerians to advance the vision of a prosperous and united Edo State.
Mercy Johnson-Okojie is married to Odianosen Okojie, who represents Esan North East/Esan South East Federal Constituency of Edo State in the House of Representatives.
The AGN President, Abubakar Yakubu noted that Actors Guild of Nigeria by this appointment reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the bridge between Nollywood and governance, stating that the creative industry remains a strategic stakeholder in national development.
