The athletics events of the 2nd Niger Delta Games began Saturday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Benin City and there were fireworks on the tracks as the men and women 100m races were decided.
Delta State once again demonstrated that they remain the State to beat in track and field as they dominated both the men and women category.
In the women’s race Ejiro Peter powered home to clinch the gold with a time of 11.55secs, leaving the duo of Edo State’s Praise Tejiri Ugoh 11.76 secs and Victory Imoisemeh Azobudi 11.78secs scrambling for silver and bronze respectively.
The men’s race was even more explosive with Delta’s Osama Chibueze taking the lead right from the start and finishing with 10.46 seconds for the gold, leaving Gift Bright of Akwa Ibom State 10.52 seconds and Saturday Godswill 10.59.secs in his trail.
An elated Niger Delta Games chief consultant Itiako Ikpokpo who is also the Delta State Athletics Athletics Association chairman nodded excitedly. He hinted later that his proteges are well prepared for a medal haul in track and field.
In other finals concluded yesterday Emerald Ugwuogu heaved 11.49m to win the shot put gold for Delta State, Blessing Ukaoha of Imo won silver with 11.41m and Uchechi Agu of Abia picked the bronze with 10.07m.
