The athletics events of the 2nd Niger Delta Games are almost done with Delta, Edo and Akwa Ibom States jostling for who tops the track and field medals table.
So far competition has been tough with Delta
raking 10 gold medals and are poised to make a strong showing in the remaining contests, while Edo with 5 gold medals and Akwa Ibom are playing catch up.
In Monday’s events Delta’s Treasure Okereke with 52.50secs won the gold hands down in the women’s 400m, Jacinta Andrew of Akwa Ibom clinched the silver with 53.83seconds and Siviana Ossai of Delta collecting the bronze with 53.85 seconds.
In the men’s race David Udoh of Akwa Ibom peeled away from the pack at the 200m mark and was never challenged to the finish line, he clocked 47.79seonds to win the gold medal. Chidiebere Chigozie of Rivers State settled for the silver returning 48.44seconds, while Mumuni Sanusi Mohammed running for Edo won bronze with 48.60 seconds.
In the women’s 5000m final Jacinta Elias of Rivers State powered home in a time of 19.04.81seconds to clinch the gold. Esther Ogbuga of Imo was good enough for second place with 19.25.28seconds, while Blessing Offiong of Cross River won the bronze with 20.31.32 seconds.
The women’s long jump was won by Delta’s Favour Olise with an effort of 6.31m, Ayi Sekibo of Rivers took the silver with a jump of 5.64m and Edidiong Joseph leapt 5.60m for the bronze.
Some of Tuesday’s finals include the men’s 4x400m relay, Mixed Relay, 200m final.
