Convicted comedian and actor Olarewaju James a.k.a Baba Ijesha will Monday next week know if he can temporarily be a freeman pending when the appeal on his sentence would be determined.
Baba Ijesha was convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment in July by the Lagos State Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja for sexually assaulting an underage girl. However, his counsel Chukwudi Adiukwu applied for a post conviction bail as they await the outcome of his appeal at the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal.
Mr. Adiukwu, told the court Wednesday, that the defence team had brought notice for bail pending appeal pursuant to Section 6 (6) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
He submitted that Section 51 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL), 2015 empowers the court to admit his client to bail, either unconditionally or upon reasonable conditions.
But Lagos State prosecutor Omowunmi Bajulaye-Bishi disagreed. She asked the court not grant Baba Ijesha bail.
