The Nigeria Universities Commission has withdrawn its letter directing Vice Chancellors to re-open the schools that have been shut due to the seven-month long Academic Staff Union of Universities strike.
A letter earlier Monday signed by NUC Director, Finance and Account, Sam Onazi had instructed the V.chanchellors to re-open all federal universities, but later in the day another letter also signed by Mr. Onazi indicated that the order has been withdrawn
“withdrawal of circular NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/135 dated September 23, 2022” “I have been directed to withdraw the NUC Circular Ref: NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/135, and dated September 23, 2022 on the above subject.
“Consequently, the said circular stands withdrawn. All pro-chancellors and chairmen of governing councils, as well as vice-chancellors of federal universities are to please note. Further development and information would be communicated to all relevant stakeholders.
“Please accept the assurances of the Executive Secretary’s warmest regards”
While reacting to the first letter, ASUU president Emmanuel Osodeke told Tribune Online that “as far as ASUU and its members across the country are concerned, public universities in the country had not been closed down by anybody including ASUU, and it is only that ASUU members are staying away from classrooms to press home their demands from the Federal Government.
“We are not bothered about whether Federal Government directed VCs to reopen schools or not.
“So, we are still on strike and so we shall remain until the Federal Government do what is right and good for the public universities in the country,” Osodeke stressed.
