Striking Nigerian universities lecturers have been given the option of calling off their eight months old industrial action or head to the Supreme court to challenge the order of the Court of Appeal, which has urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to put a stop to the strike immediately.
The court, however, granted the application on the condition that the union obeys the ruling of the lower court and calls off the strike immediately pending the determination of the substantive suit.
The court gave ASUU seven days within which to file the appeal following the obedience of the ruling of the lower court.
The National Industrial Court of Nigeria had on September 21 ruled in favour of the Federal government in the suit filed by the Ministry of Labour and Employment praying the court to prevail on ASUU to call off the months long strike.
Justice Polycarp Hamman, restrained ASUU from continuing with the industrial action pending the determination of the suit filed against ASUU by the Federal Government.
