President Muhammadu Buhari has been called upon by the Niger Delta caucus in the House of Representatives to relieve the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Sadiya Farouq following statements credicted to her concerning the floods that ravaged several States.
During a session with newsmen in Abuja Ms. Farouq had presented statistics on how the floods affected each State and she noted that Bayelsa State was not in the top ten of worst hit States She submitted that Jigawa State was the worst affected according to her statistics. The Bayelsa government responded that the figures presented by the Minister were inaccurate and they do not represent the reality on the ground.
The Niger Delta House Representative caucus Monday agreed with the Bayelsa government saying the Ms Farouq was playing politics with the Federal government intervention.
Fred Agbedi, the leader of the group, flanked by eight other lawmakers from the region, said the President must relieve the minister of her job, or they will take action.
“We call on the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to honourably resign her appointment as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria failing which Mr President should relieve her of her appointment immediately,” said Fred Agbedi who led eight members of the caucus to a press briefing in Abuja.
Abiante Dagomie, another lawmaker from Rivers State, said Bayelsa and other states in the Niger Delta region are currently submerged by flood and urged President Buhari to take action while he noted that no dredging has been done along the major channels of rivers that empty in the delta in the past 30 years.
