Over 1,000 athletes and fun runners have registered to participate in the Warri Effurun Peace Marathon billed for Saturday November 26.
The 10km race would be flagged off by a representative of the Delta State government by 7.am at the Effurun end of the Airport Road and it will finish at the Warri Township Stadium. Also, the Corporate Relays making its debut, will see teams competing for honours as they carry the flags of their respective organisations.
“Everything is set and we are looking forward to a rewarding day,” said Mrs. Joyce Bozimo, the chief executive of the Warri Effurun Peace Marathon.
“We have tried all our best to set up the event despite the challenges and it is left for the athletes and the fun runners to come out in numbers and celebrate fitness as they also compete for the cash prizes.”
Some of the elite athletes are hoping to use the race as warm up training ahead of the National Sports Festival which is scheduled to begin the following week. In the last edition, Ishamel Sadjo won the men category, while Joy Abiye-David won the women category. However, it remained to been seen if they can retain their titles and pocket the N1m top prize. The second winner will get N500,000, the third place winner will collect N300,000.
