German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, during his two day visit to Nigeria, told his host, President Bola Tinubu that the number of Nigerians seeking asylum in Germany is worrying.
He revealed that about 14,000 Nigerians are in the process of being deported, adding that another 12,500 are being tolerated because of their good behavior and Nigeria’s reluctance to take in persons without proper identification and documentation.
“The current spike in Nigerians filing initial asylum claims in 2023 has sparked worries. Nearly 14,000 Nigerians might be deported, and the great majority of them do not have the necessary identification cards.
“We are prepared to collaborate in order to enhance migration,” said Mr. Scholz.
In his response President Tinubu said he would be happy to welcome back Nigerians who have behaved well and are properly identified.
“If someone is a compatriot and has ‘behaved well,’ we are willing to accept them back.”
