The family of five teenage sisters were glad to welcome their kids back after five months of being held hostage by kidnappers in Zamfara State.
They were kidnapped by gunmen in June along with their mothers and two brothers in Furfuri, their home town. The gunmen left the women as they could not cope with the long trek into the bush, they also released the boys, but kept the girls since June.
Reports by BBC said the family paid N72m to secure their release.
“I had never lost hope of seeing my daughters again,” mother of the girls Mrs Hajiya Hadiza said.
She added that the girls were “distressed”, some with rashes on their bodies apparently “because of mosquito bites”.
Mrs Hadiza said the girls told her that they “were allowed to bathe only five times and without a soap” in the entire time they spent in captivity.
The Zamfara state governor met the girls after their release on Monday night and ordered a “proper medical check” on them.
