18-years-old basketballer suffers heart attack, footballer commits suicide

A young Nigerian basketball player, Seyi Sodiq, has slumped and died in Abuja.
Sodiq, 18, according to reports was based in Hungary where he played basketball with Alba Fehérvár men’s basketball team. While in Hungary, he was reported to have had medical issues and needed surgery but was asked to return home by his parents to seek medical care since February 2022.
According to his club’s website he resumed training after receiving treatment, but as he prepared to return to Hungary last Saturday, he suffered a heart failure and died just a week to his 19th birthday.
The memorial on the club’s website recalls that the African basketball player arrived in Hungary at the age of 13 and stood out from the local field with his excellent performances in the junior championships. At the age of 16, he made his debut for the Székesfehérvár-based club’s adult team.
In another development a former Switzerland midfielder Karim Gazzetta has taken his own life at his home in Bosnia and Herzergovina.
The 27-year-old was found dead in front of his home in the city of Mostar, 45 miles south of Sarajevo, early this morning, local media said. Police were conducting an investigation outside his home earlier today.
He had signed for local team Zrinjski, the reigning Bosnian champions, in the summer but was restricted to two appearances owing to injuries.
Gazzetta’s first club, Servette, said in a statement posted on social media: “The Servettienne family mourns today the disappearance of Karim Gazetta, child of the club. To his loved ones, his family, we send our most sincere condolences and our support. Rest in peace Karim.”
