On the first day of the National Sports Festival tagged Delta 2022, Nigerian coaches across all sports came together to form the Nigerian Coaches Association.
After its inaugural meeting here in Asaba, Delta State the coaches had an election and chose the executive committee who will ensure that the NCA achieve its objectives and work its way to becoming a respectable organisation in the local and international sports arena.
Coach Gabriel Opuana was elected president of the association; Dr.Joy Mayaki was elected vice president. William Ntiense is the general-secretary, Wilson Idanwekhai assistant secretary, Faith Abudu treasurer, Oluyomi Sule Olademeji financial secretary, Yinka Mosunmola Adeoti is the welfare officer, Lekan Soetan is the publicity secretary and Scott Nnaji as Chief Whip.
Speaking after the election coach Opuana said a new era has come for Nigerian coaches and the NCA will strive to ensure that coaching becomes a rewarding career for those who chose to go into.
“Our major aim is to improve the quality of coaching, ensure that they get what is entitled to them and contribute to development of sports in general in Nigeria.
“We are not a pressure group, but an association that wants to help our sports grow, to the benefit of the athletes, their coaches and the country.”
Speaking in the same vein the secretary general Williams said consultations have been going on for long before the inaugural meeting and election.
Already some eminent sports administrators have pledged their support for the NCA.
