Medics at the boxing event of the National Sports Festival battled to save a boxer who collapsed after he finished his bout.
lgbouargo chucks of Imo State took on Prince Gaby Amagor of Delta State in the 86kg bout at Events Center at Asaba, and after the fight he was walking out of the hall when he suddenly collapsed.
Medics placed him on oxygen and tried to stabilize him, but unfortunately he died before getting to the hospital.
“He was well and okay and did not show any sign of distress,” said Akinyele Durotoye who is the Nigeria Boxing Federation secretary-general.
“His coach was with him but left him to get some equipment momentarily, unsuspecting the boxer was in danger.
“It’s one of those tragedies we see at sports venues with athletes having underlying health conditions.
“His death has nothing to do with the bout.”
The boxing events continued despite the tragedy.
“We had no reason to stop the bouts since it was an accident outside the ring.
“Besides the medics and medical facilities are adequately prepared to deal with any emergency,” said a local organising _committee_ official.
