Abeokuta the Ogun State capital witnessed a chaotic scenes Tuesday as youths took to the streets to protest the lingering fuel and new naira notes scarcity. Two banks premises in the city were vandalised by crowd that gathered Sapon area. And in Ondo State protesters blocked the ever busy Ore-Benin express causing traffic to come to a standstill for several hours. According eye witness account, the protest in Ogun was largely peaceful until the police came and started shooting leaving one of the protesters dead. This engraged the youths who set Access Bank ablaze and also vandalised the First Bank offices. “It was a protest although it did not start as one. When we gathered and the bank said they are not attending to anyone, people stood outside the premises and were complaining,” a witness who pleaded anonymity said. “As the crowds increased people began to sing songs and the word spread that people are protesting. Before we knew it police came and were shooting sporadically,” the witness further said.
Ogun State police command spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi said the situation had been brought under control In Ondo motorists were forced to use alternative routes as the protesters prevent movement on the expressway. The Ondo State police commissioner Oyeyemi Oyediran urged youths in the state to desist from causing chaos in the State adding that the police was aware of plans by the youths to stage a protest.
