Jigawa State is reeling from last Wednesday’s petrol tanker explosion, which has left 170 people dead and others still battling for their lives in the hospital.
Minister of Petroleum, Heineken Lokpobiri who paid a condolence visit to the governor and people of Jigawa State Saturday lamented the incident, which happened when citizens tried to scoop fuel from a tanker that has been involved in an accident.
“We are deeply concerned about this development in the state,” Lokpobiri said.
“I think this is the most devastating one we have seen in recent times, and we are doing everything to prevent things like this.”
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau said it had commenced investigation into the explosion.
“The team will assess the circumstances surrounding the crash and the explosion to identify causal factors and provide safety recommendations aimed at preventing future occurrences.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this devastating accident. The NSIB is committed to uncovering the cause of the explosion and ensuring that safety lessons are learnt,” a statement from the bureau read.
