The first lady Aisha Buhari, has backed down from the on-going defamation case brought against Aminu Mohammed a final year student of the Federal University, Dutse, who was accused of tweeting unpalatable text about the wife of the President.
Aminu had spent two weeks in prison after he was arrested for tweeting ‘Mama is feeding fat on poor people’s money’ with an unflattering photo of Aisha Buhari. She then instructed the police to track him down for tweet which was published in June 2022.
He was arraigned at an Abuja High Court with Justice Yusuf Halilu presiding. Aminu Mohammed pleaded not guilty to charge and was remanded in prison. However, the prosecuting counsel Fidelis Ogbode hinted that the first lady has decided to withdraw the case against the student. And he has been released from prison unconditionally, according to reports he is expected to meet with the first lady and her husband before being allowed to go home to his parents.
Aminu Mohammed’s case had attracted a lot of condemnation. Amnesty International urged the first lady to set him free and the National Association of Nigeria Students threatened a nationwide protest.
He added, “I feel for the boy, he arrived here with just N2000, and it is finished. He complained of hunger today, but there was nothing we could do since no one has been allowed to visit or call him. He only ate bread this morning.”
