Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has deported Belgian born Shallie Abbuisi in controversial circumstances, following her participation in the formation of a new political movement..The New Force.
Ms. Abbuisi was spokesperson for The New Force and the Ghanaian authorities took note of her participation in a viral video which drew attention from Ghanaians against the background of Economic hardships being experienced in country.
Ms. Abbuisi was first arrested on December 7 and was charged to court for violating Ghanaian immigration rules. She came to the country in 2017 on a student visa and later obtained residence permit.
The GIS explained Thursday that the decision to repatriate Ms. Abbuisi was based on the revocation of her residence permit by the Comptroller-General, in accordance with Section 20 (2)(a) of the Immigration Act, 2000, Act 573.
The GIS also explained that Ms. Abbuisi obtained a student permit through fraudulent misrepresentation.
“Per the law, Ms Shalimar Abbiusi could not remain in Ghana and the Comptroller-General ordered her removal from the country,” said a GIS statement.
She was repatriated on December 19, 2023, aboard Air Brussels Flight No. SN 319, back to her home country, the GIS added.
Meanwhile, The New Force said in a statement that deportation by the GIS was a violating of Ms. Abbuisi’s fundamental human rights.
“It deeply saddens us, hearing the unsettling circumstances and experiences she had,” said the statement.
“Shallie’s impeccable conduct is a reminder to the international community about the importance of fully embracing human rights laws, democracy, justice, the presumption of innocence and the burden of proof even in difficult circumstances. An honourable life is not lived without friction.
“We apologize for the disregard of international human rights laws in our Republic of Ghana. In a gesture of accountability, we extend apologies to the Kingdom of Belgium, the EU committee and the international community at large.”
